Member Resources
We welcome new members, both women and men, living in the villages of Centerbrook, Essex and Ivoryton, who are interested in gardening and working in the community. We offer informative programs, horticultural workshops, trips to interesting gardens, and the opportunity to spend time with people who have the same passion for projects undertaken by the club.
If you are interested in learning more about club membership, please download our Membership Application Form on the New Member Information page on this website.
The Essex Garden Club is a member of The Federated Garden Clubs of CT, Inc. which has more than 6,500 members, the New England Garden Clubs, Inc., and the National Garden Clubs, Inc.
Once You Become a New Member of EGC
Once you become a member, you will have access to the Members Only section of the website which contains activity calendars with all dates and times for park clean-ups and other programs and events. Please note these on your personal calendar. We will send out emails from VSP to remind the members of specific times of the activities and locations we will be maintaining and beautifying.
You might want to organize a garden tote bag with your garden club hat, gloves, clippers, shovels, weed buckets/tarps and pruning tools. It's always good to mark them with your name. We love new ideas, so as you become familiar with our town parks and spaces, please let us know if you see something that we can work on as a committee.
As a new or prospective member, you will have 2 sponsors to support your application to the garden club. In your first year as a member, your sponsors will take on the role of mentors to provide information and guidance so that you will feel comfortable to become actively engaged in the garden club. You and your sponsors should decide together on the support and activities that might be helpful. You may drive together to meetings, where your sponsors will introduce you to other members. They could provide you with a tour of our town, pointing out the areas we maintain as our civic responsibilities, and where we do our work for May Market at Cross Lots.
May Market is a particularly important time to connect with your sponsors as there will be a number of activities to prepare for our fundraiser. Ask them any questions you may have and pair-up with your sponsors on activities such as the “digs”, and “divide and pot”. Be sure you know about your assignment for the day of May Market.
Most importantly, stay in touch with your sponsors, and ask for the support and information you need.
Their role is to make you feel comfortable and encourage your active participation in our garden club.
A look at the some of the work and fun that goes into being a member of the Essex Garden Club
Preparing for May Market
In addition to giving plants from their own gardens, members ask their friends and neighbors to donate plants ... which involves going out to dig them up!
After donated plants have been dug up, garden club members meet at the Cross Lots to "Divide and Pot" them for sale at May Market.
Spring and Fall Clean-Up
In April and September, all members gather to clean up plantings in our parks and town islands and share in pride of our community and accomplishments.
Maintaining the Town Plantings
In May, members are placed in groups and assigned areas around town to
water, weed and generally keep tidy throughout the summer.
Decorating the Town
In November, all members gather and collect greens from friends' and neighbors' gardens to be used to decorate Main Street for the Holiday Season.
